The fight is not over.
A federal court on July 18, 2025, blocked the controversial Washington state Senate Bill 5375 reporting law that would require priests to violate the seal of confession, siding with the state’s Catholic bishops who filed suit against the measure earlier this year.
Early indications suggest that the state of Washington plans to appeal the decision. We must assume that these attacks on our First Amendment rights (and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment) will continue to be promoted by wayward states like Washington and California (the proposed bill was Senate Bill 360).
We should never forget how vital appointments to “our” judicial courts are, especially the U.S. Supreme Court. One positive aspect of this troubling decision from Washington State has been the support from President Trump’s Justice Department (DOJ), which also sued over its new anti-Catholic law. The process would have been significantly different during the “Biden War on Christianity.”
In the coming weeks, we will outline and provide facts on how the previous administration weaponized the federal bureaucracy and the DOJ against Christians. A useful pre-read is Michael Rubin’s Op-Ed, “Why Does Biden Treat Christians with Disdain?” (Washington Examiner, April 10, 2024).
We must stay vigilant in safeguarding our religious freedoms. The slope is slippery, and liberty is lost one bill at a time. Thanks for reading!
