Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord
Catholics worldwide celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord today because it marks exactly nine months before Christmas Day—a typical human gestation period. This is one of the most significant feast days in the Catholic Church. It commemorates the moment when the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced that she would conceive Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
Mary’s “Yes” (her fiat) is her complete trust in God’s will and marks the beginning of our salvation, as God unfolds His plan—entering salvation history through a humble “Yes.”
“Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.” — Luke 1:38
What does it mean for us?
The Annunciation is the moment heaven touched earth—and waited for a human response. Mary’s humble “Yes” reminds us that God may be waiting for our answer.
“Mary’s ‘Fiat’ is the model of every Christian vocation.” — St. John Paul II
World Yes Day gives us a chance to reflect on God’s will in our lives: What is God calling me to do? And how will I respond?
“Lord, on this Solemnity, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant me the humility, courage, and grace to say ‘Yes’ to Your will. Strengthen married couples to be open to the gift of life, to trust in Your Divine Providence, and to place their fears in Your hands.”
“One ‘Yes’ to God can change the world—Mary proved it.”
