Romans 12:1–2
DO NOT CONFORM TO THIS WORLD
Are we allowing our politics to shape our faith—or our faith to shape our politics?
This reflection on our faithful participation in public life as disciples of Christ comes from St. Paul, who wrote to the Christians in Rome 2000 years ago. In Romans 12:1–2, he challenged them not to conform to the world but to be transformed by the renewal of their minds.
That challenge is just as relevant today.
As practicing Christians, we must examine whether our political convictions reflect the faith we profess.
Consider the difficult moral questions confronting our society: abortion, medical interventions for minors experiencing gender dysphoria, marriage and family, and the dignity of every human life.
These issues demand serious examination through Scripture, Church teaching, prayer, and a well-formed conscience.
And we must apply those standards consistently, even when doing so challenges our preferred political party, our favored candidate, or the choices of someone we love.
So here is my challenge to every practicing Christian, including myself:
Have we examined our political convictions against the teachings of Christ? Or have we adjusted our understanding of those teachings to accommodate our politics?
St. Paul challenges us not to conform to the world. Are we listening?
