Today, April 25, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist — one of my favorite saints. Any idea why?
First, he was named Mark. So was I. 😊
Second, his story of falling and redemption helped shape my lead character, Micah Miller, in THE FALLEN.
Early in his ministry, Mark faced failure. While on mission with Saint Paul the Apostle, he left early at Perga (Pamphylia) and returned to Jerusalem, creating a sharp break between them.
But failure was not the end of his story.
Mark remained faithful to Christ and would go on to author the Gospel of Mark — the shortest, and likely earliest, of the four Gospels. Tradition holds that he recorded the preaching and eyewitness testimony of Saint Peter the Apostle, founded the Church in Alexandria, and ultimately died as a martyr.
His life reminds us of an important truth: Failure in vocation or mission does not define the final outcome. God’s grace restores.
That’s the arc of Micah Miller.
- A former Army Ranger.
- A disgraced priest.
- A haunted widower.
Micah wanted to disappear into the violent streets of Haiti as a mercenary with nothing left to lose—until he reluctantly answers the Pope’s call.
Now he leads Gideon’s Sword against the evil consuming America’s soul… and his own. His war is both spiritual and personal.
And only one will be won.
